The Red Knot undergoes one of the longest migrations of any bird, breeding in the far north of Canada and Alaska (migrating then to the southern tip of Tierra del Fuego), or in Iceland, northern Europe and Russia (wintering in Africa, Papua New Guinea, Australia and New Zealand). Their yearly round trip is over 18,600 miles. When not breeding, they form enormous flocks numbering up to 50,000 birds.
